He nodded and twisted his lips just as she winced is pain
“Are you okay?”
She sighed, “my cheek hurts a bit still” she sad softly and looked at him directly
He brought his hands up to her face and brushed the mark slightly before pulling away and shaking his head.
“That’s going to leave an ugly bruise.” He said and then took another sip of his drink.
“I’m sure everyone at school will notice.”
She sighed and looked at him. Her cheek swelling. “It looks really bad then I suppose” she said softly.
Feeling only some of his touch against her cheek.
“At least I’m not any uglier….” She joked trying to get him to smile.
She picked up her drink and downed the rest of it quickly. “So you ready to study?” She asked trying to change the subject.
Internally thinking off ways to lessen the swelling.
He shook his head at her remark. Her attempt at changing the subject as well as cheer up the mood wasn’t helping him any.
He stood up and walked towards the door.
“I’ll go get the books… i have your sketch book… you left it at the table in the library.” He said as he slipped out of the cottage and into the car to get their things.
He returned moments later and sat down beside her placing their books on the coffee table that was in the front of them.
“Would you like another drink?” He asked softly as he quickly finished the rest of his own.
She sighed, then looked up in surprise as he mentioned he had her sketch book. “D-did you look at it?” She asked.
She had hoped he hadn’t. No one had seen her sketches. It was too personal.
As he left she leaned back. Twiddling her fingers as she waited. When he returned she smiled.
“I would love another drink. If that’s okay with you I suppose?” She said and opened up her old journal and the text book. “So what do you still need help with on what we are currently learning?” She asked
Marshall shook his head and stared at the black book feeling curious about it. It did seem personal to her and he got that sense it would only feel wrong looking at it when it wasn’t even his in the first place.
He figured maybe if he had it would have suggested why she was always bruised.
He brushed it off as she changed the subject regarding the material they were working on.
He stood up from the couch and grabbed her glass off the table and made his way back into the kitchen to help prepare drinks for the both of them once more.
“I studied the chapters as you suggested and even worked on some homework. The teacher said problems on the papers will be similar to those on the midterms so its important i understand the material.
The first four problems on the homework paper I used the journal you gave me as a guide… and then decided to challenge myself and do the rest based on what I studied… I need you to check and see if they are correct.” He explained as he returned and placed the drinks back on the table and sat beside her.
“As helpful as the journals are… I can’t use them on the test…but I think I’m getting the hang of things. I just hope they’re right… if i pass midterms the band and I could perform at homecoming. This could be our first step to getting more recognition and we could get more gigs.” He said with a hopeful smile, trying to ignore the swelling mark on her face.
She could see him watch her journal and sighed. Maybe he’d be he one she’d show it to. The very first. She thought to herself.
As he stood and took the drinks she smiled. “I’m glad to hear you’re actually studying. It seems like you’ll really be able to understand the material.” She said simply.
At mention to look over his answers she picked up the papers, “it’s good you’re trying with out the book. Cause you’re right you won’t have it for the midterm. But it is helping you to prepare for it and complete your homework” she explained. As she looked over it she was amazed. Only a couple of problems were wrong and not even by much, she circled the parts that he specifically needed to fix writing the proper way to the side of giving him a question to help him resolve the issue.
When she checked off the correct ones over 75% of them were correct. As he sat down she had just finished up. Even put a score over the top of the paper.
He had a 79% overall. Then handed him the sheet
He looked at the papers not sure how he was feeling yet. He nodded as he even went through the work in his own head at the problems she had circled.
Looking at his overall grade he was a bit surprised but even felt like he was a failure.
“Well. .. it’s not a good grade just a little bit above failing but at least it’s not completely failed.
I’ll have to keep practicing them.” He replied and then placed the sheet of paper down where he took a gulp of his drink
She sighed. “A 79% isn’t failing you’re at about a B average. You still have two weeks to get this down. We are only three days in” she said softly.
She looked at him. “Why don’t we rewrite these problems you missed and we do them over? Okay? Without the journal like you already tried.” She explained and took some more sips of her drink. She breathed softly.
