Derogatory terms that I have ran into in the magickal community

wolfofantimonyoccultism:

Not trying to offend anybody through this list of words, and definitions. I just thought this would be educational, and I found it quite interesting after running into these terms a couple times. It’s always very interesting to take a look at thought processes, and the way they form opinions of others. If you have anything to add I encourage you to reblog, and add them to help us gain a better understanding of the magickal community’s derogatory terms.

List of derogatory terms that I have ran into in the magickal community:

Once-Born – This was originally used to refer to Christians that became born again. It’s a way of saying that this is your first incarnation, but it implies that you do not have knowledge, wisdom, or skill. The opposite of this would be Twice-Born.

Cowan – A non-witch, or a non-initiate. A word that was used for people non initiated into the craft, or for people that were not quote on quote “real witches”. This also pertain  to people that we’re not believed to be doing “real magick”.

Warlock – A betrayer, traitor, or oath-breaker. Someone who has betrayed their craft, or coven.

Heretic – Somebody who believes in a belief that is not in the majority belief established in a custom, tradition, or culture.

Mundanes – This term is meant to refer to people that know nothing of magick, or the occult.

Muggles – This term is originally from Harry Potter, but was eventually used by some chaos magicians, some pop culture witches, and some people new to the community. This term is meant to refer to people that know nothing of magick, or the occult, and do not use, or experience it.

McWiccan – A person that does not belong to a specific tradition, or lineage of Wicca. Who brings in a bunch of different random other traditions into their religious working. They do pretty much whatever they feel like, while calling themselves a Wiccan.

Cafeterian – Used to refer to a person that practices a certain religion that picks, and chooses certain dogmas that they want to follow, while not practicing others.

Playgan- This is used to refer to a person that is only a pagan to fit their self-image. These people usually aren’t too into the pagan belief system besides the title, and are known for being fake pagans. The name is made of the words play, and pagan.

Party Pagans – This is used to refer to pagans that are only in it for the celebrations, holidays, and parties.

Paganazi – Used to refer to a person that takes their Pagan beliefs too far in which they end up hating all other religions.

Blood Junkie – This term refers to a sanguinarian vampire that can not control their thirst for blood.

Leech, or Parasite – Usually used to refer to a sanguinarian vampire, psi-vampire, or emotional vampire for the act of just being a vampire.

Crafty – A person that started learning magick, and the occult because of the movie The Craft. These people are said to build their complete philosophy, and belief system around the movie.

DIEanic (spelled with the capitalization) – Usually used to refer to witches, or wiccans that hate, or have a strong bias against men usually in a extreme circumstance.

Green Meanie, or Tree hugger – A spiritual radical environmentalist. It is used to refer to a practitioner that uses their spirituality only as a way to push their doctrine of obsessive environmentalism.

Fluffy bunny, or fluffies – A fake wiccan, and sometimes used to refer to a fake pagan, or fake witch. Someone who knows nothing about the religion, or craft, and only tries to take the title because they think it’s cool, or are trying to follow a fad.

Cookbook Witch – A witch that only uses spells, and rituals that are made by someone else. These witches are said to not have any prior training, or understanding of how magick works. They just follow everything exactly without understanding the more intricate parts of spell work, and ritual. This term is named this, because the acts the witches portray are a lot like doing a recipe out of a cookbook.

IRALOB, or I read a lot of books – A person that thinks they know everything, because they have read a various assortment of books, or articles.

Insta-Witch, IRAB, or I read a book – A witch that reads a book, or article on a subject, and automatically thinks they are an “expert” on it.

Categorization of Sigils

en-tropics:

Another follow up post on my Introduction to Sigils post as well as Advanced Sigils, in which i’m going to cover how I choose to break up the main purposes I see sigils typically being used for. This post will look to expand these terms, define them, and give examples for each category. This can also be used to help witches who are just starting off see what sort of things sigils can be used for, and I encourage them to come up with more creative variations.

Decreasers/Increasers

The most basic and common sigil I see are what i’d call Decreasers/Increasers. These are sigils that aim to ( as stated in the name ), increase an aspect or decrease it. These can be as simple as “Increased Happiness” or maybe “Decrease Negative Energy”, but they aren’t limited to such basic uses, and one can easily be creative enough to stretch the limits that are presented.

Influencers

Another common and relatively basic sigil is what I call an Influencer. These are cousins to Increaser/Decreasers, but rather then try to pull in or push out energies, they try to work with ones already present. So, maybe rather than saying “Decrease Negative Energy”, you could say “I will be able to handle the Negative Energy that comes to me”, which is influencing it more then completely avoiding it. In my work, I find that these tend to be more effective then Decreasers/Increasers since they have the basics to work with where as Decreasers/Increasers have to do a bit more work.

Wards

Not all wards are sigils, but the term fits for the general purpose this sigil plays. Warding sigils are sigils that aim to protect a person, object, or a space. Their intentions are a bit trickier, but if they’re aimed at keeping a space clean, safe and sound, then I’d place them into the warding category.

Wells

Again, wells aren’t always sigils, but the term fits. A welling sigil is a sigil made with the intention of storing a lot of energy. These can be helpful in spellwork to give certain spells a boost, or even can be used a refresher when you’re feeling low on energy. Wells don’t always have to store your own energy, as they can also be collector sigils, which draw in energy from their nearby environment and hold it for later uses. (If you are drawing from your area with a welling sigil, I recommend putting a limit on how much energy is stored so you don’t drain the area you’re working it)

Linking

Linking sigils are distant cousins of the welling sigil. Linking sigils are made to connect multiple workings, people, or even other sigils, to one main source. Linking sigils can hold energy, and supply/provide it to the things it’s connected to, or rather, it can collect energy from everything it’s connected to and store it/transform it and use it for a working. Popularized by chaos magicians, and was originally used to power glamour bombs in certain areas, but now has taken on a much larger and diverse role. ( In the future I plan on covering Linking sigils in more depth )

Builders

Building sigils are sigils that are made to be a representation of something or aid in creating something. These could be ideas, concepts, or more magickal based constructions. These can be helpful if one is doing work in the astral, using sigils to represent structures in a plain and can give one the ability to have quick access or an easy focus to edit the structure.

Anyways, for now, that’s all the categorizations i’ve personally found myself. If you have more, feel free to tack it on and i’ll look it over, and maybe eventually add it to this post if I feel it fits. Next post will most likely be covering Linking sigils and the history behind them, and that will probably be the last strictly sigils post for a while. Until next time! o|o/

Annoying things witches are sick of hearing

If you have asked some of these questions, or said some of these things yourself then that’s okay, just please know for future reference, most (not all) witches find them quite annoying 🙂

oh so you worship satan? No an extremely low percentage of witches are actually satanists but majority are not.

witchcraft isn’t real, grow up. Do I even have to explain this one?

• Why don’t you wear all black? Witches are witches, not goths.

god hates you. I thought god loves all his children?

You’re a man, you can’t be a witch! If you gender identify as male you are still a witch, the term “witch” has no gender

so you’re gay and a witch?… 🤦🏻‍♀️

you are going to summon demons and ghosts when you preform spells! Umm.. no, witches know how to cast a spell with protection and know how to not attract negative energies.

• you’re a witch? But you’re like really pretty. No unlike all the stories and fairytales, witches are not old, do not have green skin and warts on their face.

Magic, or Magick? Witchcraft, or…

tarigrove:

If all of the similar names and phrases that float around witchcraft posts confuse you as much as they have confused me in the past, I submit to you my personal method for understanding the difference between everything:

Disclaimer: I am a solitary eclectic witch with a highly personal craft, and the definitions that follow are my own personal understandings of each word or phrase.

  • Magic is the energy that vibrates between everything.  It is the primary energy that witches use to perform magick.
  • Magick is the transmuted energy that witches send out when they are performing magick.
  • Performing magick is the act of using invisible energies and forces to alter the world as you wish to alter it.
  • Witchcraft is learning to use magic (and other energies and forces that you are familiar with) to perform magick, and then actually performing magick with a personal flair.
  • Practicing magick or witchcraft is the act of having it become an integral and embedded aspect of your life.
  • Spellcraft is learning how to properly use a spell or type of spell for your own personal craft, and then actually using the spell to perform magick.
  • Spells are usually the main method that witches use to perform magick.  Spells can be viewed as magick enhancers or carriers.  I view a spell as being a way to organize the magick being performed so that it is more concentrated and focused when it is sent out.
  • A type of witchcraft is any sort of witchcraft that has some overarching connection.
  • A path of witchcraft is any type of witchcraft that operates under a set theme.
  • A way of witchcraft is any type of witchcraft that operates under a set of rules.
  • To cleanse something is to remove all negative energies from it.
  • To purify something is to convert its existing energies into its original pure form.
  • To charge something is to feed it with energy that may or may not have been imbued with a specific essence and intent.  You can charge it with unused magic.
  • To enchant something is to magickally give it a specific task.

  • To place a glamour is to magickally affect how something is viewed.
  • To charm something is to magickally cause it to attract or repel something.

  • A charm can either be a spell to charm something, or a charmed object, depending on the context that the phrase is used in.
  • An amulet is an object (often charmed) object that is meant to repel evil, bad energy, or anything negative.
  • A talisman is an object (often charmed) that is meant to draw power. Talismans are usually connected to the other realms.

That is all that I have at the moment, but I will add more or create a Part II once my understanding of other similar terms grows a little bit.  In the mean time, you are welcome to use these definitions if they work for you.  I hope that y’all like it!  ^_^
